Beauregard Parish Sheriff deputies got an unexpected assist from Mother Nature recently.

Sheriff Ricky Moses said Willis Paul Jones, 27, was bit by a copperhead snake Tuesday as he was trying to evade authorities in a wooded area.

"(The chase) ended when the copperhead found him first and bit him on the foot," Moses said.

Moses said Jones, of DeQuincy, surrendered to authorities and was admitted into the intensive care unit at a local hospital.

Jones recovered from the bite and transported to the Calcasieu Correctional Center, where he was booked on charges of burglary and theft.

Moses said Jones stole two boats, two motors, a trailer and a four-wheeler from different locations.
