Your input requested for Huntsville's future city plan

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

What should happen to the old Grissom High School? What can the city do about all those empty strip malls?

Those are two of the questions Huntsville leaders hope to deal with in a new master plan for the city's future, and now they want to hear from you.

Thursday, Mayor Tommy Battle and city planners announced an 18-month effort to find ideas for the future. This could include things like updating zoning, or adding parks and greenways to make communities more livable, encouraging new businesses – large ones like Remington, and small ones as well.

Planners are asking for the public's input in the matter. They will be holding talks called ‘Citizens' Academies,' starting with a  kickoff meeting next Tuesday, to ask people for their observations on how to make business, recreation, and life in Huntsville better for the years and decades ahead.

"It's been 40 years since we've embarked on a plan of this magnitude," said Planning Director Michelle Jordan. "Times have changed, so we'll have lots of different opportunities to engage the public. We're looking forward to our Citizens' Academies. Our goal is to not only educate ourselves, our elected officials, but our citizens."

The city is creating a special smartphone app that will let you send messages about areas that could be improved as soon as you see them. There will also be a website for the planning process, set to be unveiled next week.

The kickoff public meeting will be May 6 at 6:00 p.m., at the First Baptist Church on Governors Drive.
