Be wary of post-storm home repair fraud

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Many storm victims whose homes were damaged or destroyed are clearing out debris, cleaning up their properties, and soon will make arrangements to repair or rebuild.

Unfortunately, there are unscrupulous individuals who wouldn't think twice about taking advantage of your misfortune. After the 2011 tornado outbreak, we received numerous reports of people being scammed by shady contractors who either never did the work promised or escalated the price of repair.

Michele Mason with the Better Business Bureau advises you to make sure to check out any potential contractor with the BBB.

"You certainly don't want to put a person in a worse position than they are already in," she said. "We hope they will take the time to check out companies with the Better Business Bureau. Check the history of contractors, make sure they have a good record with us, and make sure they are properly licensed. If they are doing a job over $10,000 they should have a license through the Alabama Home Licensure Board in addition to local licensing."

Alabama's price-gouging law goes into effect whenever a state of emergency is declared. Prices 25% or more above the average cost in the same area within the last 30 days are considered unreasonable.

Attorney General Luther Strange has asked that you report suspected price gouging or fly-by-night contractors to his office. You can do so by phone or online.
