Mayor Wharton: City is ready for 'reported' royals visit

(WMC) - Memphis Mayor A C Wharton says while he cannot confirm whether Prince Harry and Prince William are coming to Memphis, the city is ready to handle the visit if it does happen.

Wharton said that on many occasions, City of Memphis "demonstrated the ability to juggle several high profile events at the same time."

"This is a busy weekend for us, in addition to the reported visit, we've got Memphis In May starting tonight [Thursday], as well as the closeout game for the Memphis Grizzlies," he said.

The wedding the princes are reportedly attending is a private event, Mayor Wharton says it is not a matter of a lot of public money, though he says the visit would put Memphis on the map in a positive way.

"The royal family, and properly so, is often projected internationally for the good they attempt to bring wherever they visit. Working with children, missions, and that kind of thing ... Memphis being a very charitable city, it's just a perfect fit," he said.

Beaming, Mayor Wharton said the royals, if they came, could not go wrong sampling Memphis' barbecue and hitting up the other hot spots and music venues.

"Sample the best that we have to offer," he said. "Put it this way, there won't be a dull moment if they choose to take advantage of it."

When asked if he is worried about security, Wharton answered that the city is prepared.

"This is a replay for us, we've done bigger things than this and everything went off without a hitch last year, and we're prepared this time."

At the airport, WMC Action News 5's Nick Kenney met Beverly McPhail, who booked her flight from Orlando when she learned the royals would be guests at a high society Memphis wedding.

"I would call myself a royal watcher," said McPhail. "An American royal watcher."

McPhail is hoping for a chance encounter with the royals.

"I've kind of followed William and Kate's love story and read all the books and have membership to Majesty Magazine," added McPhail. "It's just, that's my hobby. My husband thinks I'm crazy, but that's what I enjoy, love doing."
