Families use initiative to carry on without power

Posted: Updated:

A lot of people from Coxey are staying with family members or friends while their homes are being repaired and power companies work on reconnecting lines.

In one family for whom that isn't an option, ingenuity and initiative are keeping body and soul together.

There aren't many lights right now on Log Cabin Road. The tornado damaged many power lines and blew away the home of Khristabel Vasquez's neighbor. She is without power and forced to find creative ways to keep her family clean.

"We have to boil water on our stove and put it in a bucket and take a shower that way," she said.

Without a working refrigerator, Vasquez has to buy groceries every day. However, some are hard to find with so many people stocking up.

"We have been looking for eggs but we can't find any," she said.

The toughest part about not having power for Vasquez is not knowing how to help those less fortunate.

"We can't find out who needs help or where we can go to help without power," she said.

Vasquez cleans up outside by day and reads by candlelight at night. Through it all, she said she is happy – she still has all of her kids.

"Anything that's material – your house, your furniture, anything can be replaced. But you cannot replace a loved one," she said.

When she gets the power back on, she said she looks forward to fixing up a few things inside her home and taking a hot shower.
