Crews in DeKalb Co. race to restore power

DEKALB COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Storm survey crews spent Wednesday in southern DeKalb County, where utility crews are working hard to get the lights back on.

Crews from across the state, totaling nearly 100 workers, have come to assist in reconnecting power. Officials with Cherokee Electric said they hope power can be restored by the end of the week.

Work has been non-stop since 2 a.m. Tuesday, officials said, and will not stop until power is restored.

DeKalb County Sheriff's deputies and state troopers are assisting in keeping roads clear so power crews can get in and out.

Some homes will have to be repaired before power can be restored, but for those who are waiting, power officials said they are working as fast as they can.

"We consider it more of a job; it is our job to give you power," said Cherokee Electric Superintendent Donald Guttery. "We are here and see and feel some of the folks' pain and we are sorry. We just say God bless you and we appreciate you being patient with us."

For homes that are not damaged, power will be restored as soon as lines are re-established. For those whose homes were damaged, that damage needs to be checked out, especially where any part of the structure has been substantially moved, because the wiring is likely to have moved, as well.

Guttery suggests having a licensed electrician check the home out to deem it safe.

Crews warned the public that sightseers only slow them down. Some crews are working on very narrow roads, and they ask that people stay away from the area if you don't need to be there.

"It is safer on them, better on us, and quicker for everyone if they did not sightsee," said Guttery.
