HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

After natural disasters like tornadoes and floods, many people reach out to help, but unfortunately, there are some people who choose to take advantage of the victims.

Yesterday, some people already had their insurance adjusters out looking at the damage to their homes. Before you hire contractors, it's important to do your homework.

Some of the most common "after-disaster" scams involve your auto, home and yard repairs or cleanup.

Check with your insurance company about policy coverage. Make sure you save all receipts for expenses that may be covered. When it comes to repairs, the Better Business Bureau also offers the following tips:

  • Don't be pressured into making an immediate decision.
  • If possible, shop around and get three or four estimates.
  • Make sure the company you are considering has a business license.
  • Get a written contract agreement with anyone you hire. It should specify the work to be done, the materials and a price breakdown.
  • Never pay in full, in advance or in cash!

While many businesses may want a deposit, the BBB suggests you pay no more than one third of the job up front. You can find a link to all of these tips in the sidebar or under the You Saw It tab.
