PDS Tornado Watch issued for North Alabama

Posted: Updated:
HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The National Weather Service in Huntsville has issued a Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) Tornado Watch for North Alabama until 9pm.

The risk of severe weather will ramp up today for north Alabama and southern Tennessee. All modes of severe weather are possible including tornadoes, damaging wind gusts, large hail, significant lightning and flash flooding.  A few strong tornadoes are possible across the south through this evening.

One wave of showers and storms will track through early this morning. These will likely remain below severe limits but could produce small hail and some wind gusts around 40-50mph. A break in the showers and storms is expected by late morning. Additional showers and storms will begin to develop and track in shortly after the lunch hour. These storms could become severe with damaging wind up to 70mph, hail and an isolated tornado possible.

A more widespread wave of thunderstorms looks likely starting late this afternoon and continuing into the evening hours. These storms will likely pose the greatest risk of severe weather including the risk for a strong tornado and damaging wind of up to 70mph. The severe weather threat will begin to shift to our east after 1 a.m.

In addition to the severe weather threat, Flash Flooding is possible where storms move repeatedly over the same areas. Three to six inches of rain could fall through early Tuesday morning. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect from 7 p.m. this evening until 7 a.m. Tuesday morning.

More showers and storms are possible along the actual front Tuesday afternoon and night before things finally wind down Wednesday morning with cooler air moving in. A few strong to severe storms are possible with this wave as well.

Prepare for possible power outages that could last several hours. If storms continue over the same area power crews may not be able to safely get the power back on.
