GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

After a beautiful weekend, a low pressure system well off to the west will slowly track towards the Great Lakes and generate a streak of wet and stormy weather for much of the work week.

The approaching system brought an increase of cloud cover Monday morning as rain also approached, first arriving in western North Carolina then northeast Georgia and the Upstate.

Monday afternoon will bring the first threat of storms, likely lasting into the evening through early Tuesday morning. The rain and thunderstorms will likely continue off and on for Tuesday as well and last until mid-week.

Winds will remain light and variable throughout the day as temperatures climb into the mid to upper 70s for both the Upstate and western North Carolina Monday. Afternoon highs will build instability and allow thunderstorms to form late in the day.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed the Upstate, northeast Georgia and western North Carolina under a slight risk of severe weather for Monday. The main threat from these storms will be damaging winds and a possible isolated tornado. Hail chances will remain minimal at this time.

Aside from severe weather, torrential downpours could cause flooding concerns for the second half of the work week. Anywhere between three and four inches of rain is possible with local areas possibly recording as much as six inches amidst the thunderstorms.

With the low moving very sluggishly across the continental United States, this setup will continue on Tuesday as well as Wednesday. Thursday will finally provide a chance of relief though some cloudy skies and a few stubborn showers will continue early in the day.
