WTOC in Rome for Canonization Ceremony

Posted: Updated:

The names John Paul II and John XXIII are inscribed in the Book of Saints in Rome, and the city swelled to capacity. WTOC's Craig Harney was in Rome as they prepared for the celebration.

Two million people were expected in Rome for the Canonization Ceremony for John Paul II and John XXIII. Vatican Square has a capacity of 700,000, so tour guides advised visitors to lower their expectations for watching the ceremony, and to be content to get what they get.

St. Peter's Square closed at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night. Many people were expected to sleep in the streets, as they awaited the 5:30 a.m. re-opening of the square. The Canonization Mass is Sunday at 10:00 a.m.

Bishop Hartmayer said that the timing of these two becoming Saints is key to the broad interest.
