Gulfport woman holds carnival to raise Autism awareness

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

A Gulfport woman hosted a carnival for her son Saturday that has been years in the making. Danita Street's 16-year-old son, Kevin McDonald, has Autism.

She says throughout his whole life they have struggled with finding fun places for him to go where he wasn't gawked at or even asked to leave because of his outbursts.

Saturday, she hosted a carnival in the North Gulfport community hoping to bring awareness to Autism and give her son a place where he can have care-free fun.

"Everyone doesn't accept autism. We've been asked to leave from several places," said Street. "You know, people don't understand his diagnosis. That's why I'm here today. I have pamphlets to pass out to the community to get them understanding. That's all it takes is a little understanding."

The carnival was totally free of charge, and from the looks of things everyone had a great time. Everything from the food to the bouncy houses was donated by the community. There was even a fire truck from the Gulfport Fire Department on the scene ready for tours.
