MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC) - On Saturday, Memphians fought to take back their neighborhoods by organizing a massive citywide cleanup.

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton's 2014 "Faith in Action Citywide Cleanup" called for 10,000 people to fight blight this weekend. But, 12,000 people answered the call, including the WMC Action News 5 family.

Forty WMC Action News 5 team members descended upon South Memphis on Saturday afternoon. Adults and children alike said it was an inspiration to see people who did not live in their neighborhood make an effort.

"We need every positive influence we can get in Memphis. We need this," said resident Mac Zo.

The effort was one of nine citywide cleanup sites across Memphis during the weekend.

Wharton says it was the largest cleanup in the state, and that fighting blight is no small matter.

"That brings up real estate values. That brings up property taxes so we can do more for parks and schools," said Wharton.

The plight to fight blight is one that fell right in line with the WMC Action News 5 mission.

"We need every positive influence we can get in Memphis. We need this," added Zo.

The City of Memphis spends nearly $10 million dollars per year on blight alone. The mayor says volunteer efforts like the Memphis Cleanup truly help with the city's bottom line.
