JACKSON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A warning for some East Alabama businesses: Jackson County Authorities said bad payroll checks are being cashed at businesses, and the problem is spreading to other counties. Somehow, someone is having some very legitimate checks printed. They look real, but when the local grocery or other type store cashes it for them, they're coming back.

At least 18 bad payroll checks were uncovered in Jackson County, four in the town of Rainsville. Authorities in DeKalb and Etowah County are also investigating. The crooks forged names of good companies such as Tyson Foods and Haymon Homes onto checks and then are being presented to various stores to cash, presented as a payroll check.

However, the stores that cash them are finding them being returned because of bad routing numbers. Sheriff's officials are warning stores to be careful when cashing payroll checks.

"The one thing you can do for us to make sure we can catch these people is make sure you get the proper identification," said Chief Deputy Rocky Harnen with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. "Make sure they've got a driver's license that's valid, and put that information on the checks so if it is bad at least we can go back and find out who they are."

Chief Harnen believes there is more than one person involved. If anyone has any information about the crime, you're asked to contact the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.
