FYFFE, AL (WAFF) -

The Alabama Education Association challenged a DeKalb County Superintendent's decision to relieve a high school basketball coach of his duties. They objected to the decision because they believe he didn't have the authority. The AEA said he can suspend him, but he can't replace him.

Having served as the boy's basketball coach at Fyffe High School for a decade, Neal Thrash was relieved on April 4 by Superintendent Hugh Taylor. Many people in the community questioned why, but no one seemed to know. However, Alabama education officials questioned the decision.

Thrash led the Red Devils to two trips to the State Regional Tournament, a trip never made before in school history. The 2014 program went 24 and 8, the most wins since the 1950's.

The AEA met with the Superintendent and the board on the issue. AEA spokeswoman Sheila Cornelison said the Superintendent had the power to suspend the coach, but replacing him is a school board decision.

"Some of the board members asked for the legalities of that, and so we have been involved in trying to provide the board with the information that they need about, you know, exactly what it is that the Superintendent has the responsibility to do," said Cornelison.

Cornelison said she would continue working with the Superintendent, but if an understanding cannot be reached, then the AEA's legal department will get involved.
