BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Birmingham police are investigating a double homicide after the bodies of a male and female were found inside a home on the 1300 block of 57th Place and Avenue N in Ensley Friday morning.

Police got to the scene around 10 a.m. after the bodies were discovered inside the house, Lt. Sean Edwards with Birmingham PD said. Edwards has confirmed this case to be a homicide investigation and said in a press release that the two victims suffered from gunshot wounds.

The coroner has not confirmed the cause of death yet and the victims' identities are being withheld pending family notifications.

Late Friday afternoon, Edwards confirmed that allegations have surfaced of illegal activity at the house. He would not comment on whether those alleged activity is tied to the victims' deaths.

When asked how they were notified about the bodies, Lt. Edwards said a citizen in the area called them. He also mentioned something about a child. But when pressed further about the child, Edwards would not elaborate.

Darnetta Smith, who says she is the older sister of the female victim, confirms that her 7-year-old niece found her mother and her mother's boyfriend.

"She's going to be old enough to remember this. She's going to be old enough to remember this. That's the sad part about it. I just hate this had to happen to her because she ain't even had a chance to enjoy her life," Smith said.

A man who lives in the area, Ricky Jones, says he's the one who initially called police.

Jones, said he was walking down Avenue N. around 9:45 a.m. when a little girl came running out of the house where the bodies were found.

Jones said the girl was screaming and crying and kept saying, "Help me, help me, I think my mom is dead."

The child told Jones that she woke up and couldn't find her mom, so she looked for her in the house. She found her mother sitting in a chair covered in blood and says her mother's boyfriend was on the floor, also covered in blood, Jones said.

Jones asked her if she spoke to her mom, and the little girl said her mother wouldn't say anything. Jones said he then contacted police.

Jones added that he's 58 years old and has never seen anything like this before. He described the neighborhood as quiet and settled, with mostly older residents.

Jones said he had seen the mother and her child at the home, but had never seen the boyfriend. He said the little girl was smart and neighbors often saw her playing outside.

According to Jones, the little girl was taken away from the scene by relatives.

We have a crew on the scene. Stay tuned to FOX6 and check back online for more updates to this story as more details are made available.
