MADISON COUNTY (WAFF) -

Madison County's plans for a new high school in the Monrovia area still face heavy skepticism from parents.

Thursday night, the board invited comments from parents of past and future students, as well as people who live in the area.

The county school system plans to build a new $46-million school using BRAC funds to alleviate overcrowding in Sparkman High School.

Parents questioned whether a smaller school could offer the same opportunities and programs that Sparkman does, and whether the school system could afford the upkeep on the new school once the BRAC money is exhausted.

"Unless the board has identified a new revenue source the public isn't aware of and can assure us that money won't be an issue, I see a financial train wreck looming around the bend," said parent David Weis.

Some parents were concerned that the new school would be in a location at an extreme end of the zone, which would force buses and students to waste fuel and mileage getting there, when a more centrally-located school would be easier to reach.

"The site has not been picked," said Superintendent Dr. David Copeland. "We've narrowed it down to two or three or four, but it certainly has not been picked at this point, and hopefully it will be very soon."

Other speakers pointed out that surveys of current Sparkman students reveal they have deep misgivings about splitting up their school, too.

Dr. Copeland said the school board is still weighing its options on how to proceed.
