A shooting is under investigation on Thursday morning after an officer shot a man during a scuffle in northeast Birmingham.
Lt. Sean Edwards with Birmingham PD says the shooting happened in an alley off Oporto Madrid Boulevard near Birmingham Fire Station 19 and East Lake Library.
Two officers were patrolling the area around 2 a.m. when they saw two individuals fitting the description from an ATM robbery that had occurred around 11 p.m. on Wednesday at the Wells Fargo on 1st Avenue North.
According to Edwards, the officers approached the subjects and a scuffle began between one officer and one subject. The second officer pulled out a taser and used it on the subject fighting the first officer.
The subject who was not involved in the scuffle allegedly pulled a gun and pointed it at one of the officers. The second officer dropped his taser, drew his weapon and fired two shots.
The subject was struck by the gunfire. He was taken to UAB Hospital for treatment. He is reportedly in critical condition after undergoing surgery. Police have not said where he was shot.
The tased individual was treated at the scene and then taken to police headquarters for questioning. Both subjects were armed.
Lt. Edwards says both individuals will be facing a charge of violation of the state firearms act. The man who was shot could face serious charges over allegedly pointing a gun at officers. He will not be charged until after he is released from the hospital.
It has not yet been determined if the two men were connected to the ATM robbery or not.
