Madison County Commissioner Dale Strong said county employees may be stealing gas. If you live in the county, the money from this fuel came out of your pocket.

Strong said the county made the discovery after an independent investigation, and several commissioners believe more thefts are occurring.

Commissioners said they're working to determine whether county employees are filling up their own tanks while at the same time fueling county trucks. One commissioner said he's looking into whether a county employee filled up a motor home.

Discussions are now in place about putting cameras up at county pumps to find out who is filling up what. Strong said the county wrapped up an investigation into the top 100 county fuel consumers (PDF), and said several questions came up after commissioners and department heads reviewed the list.

The list does not say if any of the top 100 consumers are accused of stealing gas. The county redacted employee names in the list we obtained, but left the departments and the amount of gallons pumped.

A motor and equipment service employee pumped more than 73,000 gallons of fuel between October 2012 and July 2013. During the same time period, a public works employee pumped more than 20,000. A waste control employee pumped nearly 18,000.

A District 1 and county van employee round out the top five, using between 3,900 and more than 4,500 gallons of gas.

"We already placed some cameras at some locations," said Strong. "Some of these are discrete – they don't even know they're there. This is how we caught malfeasance that was going on. We understand that some are trying to skirt through the security process and we're going to address it."
