LIONS DOWN ALABAMA A&M 5-4
FLORENCE, Ala. – The University of North Alabama snapped a five-game losing skid with a 5-4 win over Alabama A&M in the Lions' 2014 home finale at Mike Lane Field.
UNA took a early 3-0 lead but the Bulldogs tied it with a three-run third inning. The Lions regained the lead only to have A&M tie it again in the fifth. UNA then took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth on a Jake Smith RBI-single.
With the win UNA improved to 22-25 overall. Alabama A&M falls to 17-25.
UNA got a run in the first when Jake Ward singled, was sacrificed to second and scored on a Bradley Noland RBI-single.
In the second Taylor Hayes drew a walk and Thomas Lundborg and Ward followed with singles to load the bases. Brett Guzay drove in Hayes with a sacrifice fly and Lundborg scored on an RBI-single by Kyle Conkle.
A&M tied the game in the third inning on an RBI-single by Ramon Nelson and a two-run double by Cornelius Woods.
UNA went back on top in the bottom of the third as Josh Carpenter singled and scored on a Lundborg RBI-single.
A&M got four hits off UNA starter Cade Medley in the fifth to drive him from the game before Bradley Bailey came on to stop the threat with the score tied 4-4. North Alabama then scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth and the UNA relief pitchers took over from there.
Bailey (2-1) got the win for UNA, allowing just one hit in two and a third innings of work. Austin Carpenter then pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Jacob Westerhouse pitched a scoreless ninth to record his fourth save. A&M managed to load the bases with an infield single, a walk and an intentional walk before Westerhouse struckout Woods to end the game.
Noland led UNA with three hits.
The Lions close their regular-season with a three-game series at Shorter on Saturday and Sunday before beginning play in the Gulf South Conference Tournament on May 2 in Birmingham.
