ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

Sarah Good said she has a deep connection to the earth that shaped her sensibility as a sculptor.

Garden images grace the gallery with unusual twists and turns. Eclectic items become an intricate bouquet.

This is a very different type of artwork. It's the first time this type of artwork has been shown in this gallery. In fact, the artist put it together one step at a time.

Mary Beth Johns was our tour guide. The assistant professor of art education at Athens State University led us through Good's works and explaining what constitutes "Installation Art". "Installation art is different from a painting per say, because in a painting, all the artwork exists inside the frame and is moveable easily. Installation art is put together at the site."

She said it usually transforms the gallery into part of the art.  "It consists of ceramic made bricks with different words etched into them and items that look like shoes."

Bits of paper take on new meaning before decomposing back to the earth. Other works also remind us about the land.  "...and it references the idea that we really don't know the age of a tree or what has happened to the tree over time until we split it open and we do things like count the rings", said Johns.

The work entitled, "Grief Gloves" is made up of discarded gardening gloves.

Johns said the artist relied on found materials and numerous botanical sources. "This work references the work that we put into making our outdoor spaces beautiful, and the hard work we put into gardening. However the work that we do is continually dying. It's just a part of the cycle of life."

She pointed to one piece very prominently placed on the floor in the center of the gallery. "This piece is called 'garden mat' and it is made solely out of natural materials. There's red clay. There's flower petals and potting soil. The piece is put together on site."

Where else could discarded eye glasses be presented as bugs and flowers? It's an interesting blend in Bobby's Bama.

There will be a reception and lecture by the artist at the gallery On June 26th starting at 5:30pm.
