HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - A small plane made an emergency landing just short of the runway at Huntsville International Airport Monday night.
It happened around 8:30 p.m. A Huntsville International Airport spokesperson said a small plane, identified by the FAA as a Cessna 172, took off from Enterprise Municipal Airport, lost power, landed short of the west runway and flipped over in the grass.
Airport operations were temporarily suspended as emergency responders converged on the scene. A spokesperson said they were on the runway two minutes after the landing.
FAA officials said two people were in the aircraft at the time, but no injuries were reported. The airport spokesperson said after a short check by emergency responders, the pair were allowed to leave without further treatment.
Mutual aid was sent to the scene as a precaution, according to the airport spokesperson. The airport tweeted all operations returned to normal shortly after 10 p.m.
An airport spokesperson said there are tones that go off when something like this emergency landing happens. The airport has a 24/7 safety department on site where their police officers are cross-trained as firefighters, so the response was quick.
"Well, you know, the tower communicated that, and then we have a communication center here at the airport that pushes that information out to the pertinent people at the airport as well as mutual aid partners across the county," Chantel Minish, an airport spokesperson, said.
Since the landing happened late at night, there were really no major commercial flights coming in or out of the airport at the time, so no flights were delayed.
Minish said the plane was removed around 1 a.m. and placed in a hangar at the airport.
The plane is registered to Redstone Arsenal Flying Activity.
The FAA and NTSB will be investigating the incident.
