ARAB, AL (WAFF) -

Road paving efforts went underway Monday in the Marshall County town of Arab, after the city approved a one-cent sales tax last year designated only for roads.

Paving began Monday morning in the city's cemetery as the first 10-12 miles to get a new blacktop in the town this year. This marks the first paving effort since the city began collecting the tax last September.

The city's mayor feels this will be a boost for the residents and maybe even economic development.

"It just improves the look of our community. In order to attract retail and business, you have to have a good-looking infrastructure. You've got to show people that you're progressive and that's what we're doing," said Mayor Bob Joslin.

Mayor Joslin said at a rate of 10-12 miles per year, they hope to have all of the city's roads paved in a four-year period.
