JACKSON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A student from North Jackson High School was charged with bringing a weapon to school last week.

According to authorities, the teenager was charged with carrying a concealed weapon for bringing an air gun to school. A student reported the weapons to school officials. The teenager is being charged as a juvenile.

Alabama law does allow a person to be charged with carrying a concealed weapon, even if the item is an air pistol.

Investigators said they're not sure why the student had the air gun with him but that the teenager was turned in to school officials before anything happened. School officials and a visiting police officer confronted the 15-year-old, who had the air guns in a book bag.

One of the guns contains a bullet-shaped chamber which allows pellets through.

Law enforcement officials said carrying such items to school is very serious.

"The biggest concern with those kinds of things is they look so real," said Chief Deputy Rocky Harnen. "Had a law enforcement officer confronted them and they would have had it in their hand, it could have been very tragic."

The student has been suspended from school pending a board hearing, according to Jackson County School Superintendent Kenneth Harding.
