Tucson, AZ -

The Pima Community College baseball team (31-20, 20-13 in conference) split its conference doubleheader against Cochise College on Saturday at the West Campus.

Cole Plouck (Empire HS) tossed a complete-game shutout and the bats came alive for the Aztecs in the fifth and sixth innings in their 8-0 win in the first game.

Plouck, a Florida International commit, improved to 4-3 on the season after throwing all seven innings giving up four hits with nine strikeouts and two walks on 106 pitches.

After being stymied for the first four innings, the offense came out strong in the fifth as they loaded the bases with no outs. Juan Gamez (Cienega HS) and Dan Kennon hit back-to-back RBI singles to put the Aztecs up 2-0. Steven Still (Ironwood Ridge HS) scored on a groundout RBI by A.J. Acosta (Douglas HS) and Gamez scored the fourth run of the inning off of Devon Carrillo's (Sahuaro HS) sacrifice-fly RBI.

In the sixth inning, Trey Stine (Ironwood Ridge HS) hit an RBI single to score Kellen Marruffo (Sabino HS) and Kennon came through with a two-run RBI double to score Stine and Still to make it 7-0. Acosta brought in Gamez on a sacrifice-fly RBI.

Kennon had three hits for the game going 3 for 3 with three RBIs while Stine finished 2 for 2 with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk. Gamez went 1 for 2 with two runs scored and an RBI and Still was 1 for 2 with two runs scored.

The offense couldn't provide the run support in the second game as the Aztecs fell 2-1. Pima struck first in the first inning when Acosta scored on a groundout RBI by Marruffo to put them up 1-0 but Cochise tied it up in the second inning and scored once more in the fifth. The Aztecs finished with three hits for the game. Cooper Smith went 2 for 4 and Carrillo finished 1 for 4 with a double.

Ethan Rosebeck (Cienega HS) took the loss (6-2) pitching five and one-third innings giving up two runs (one earned) on nine hits with seven strikeouts and three walks on 94 pitches.

The Aztecs sit in third place in the ACCAC Division I standings and will play its final regular season home doubleheader on Tuesday against Arizona Western College at the West Campus. The games will be at noon and 2:30 p.m.
