BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

All across the area Friday, crosses were covered with black cloth. It's an outward symbol that Christians use to mark Good Friday and Jesus's death.

"We're remembering not only the pain and agony, the suffering and the sacrifice that he went through, but we're also remembering in both an individual way and in a much broader, collective world wide way the suffering," said Highlands United Methodist Pastor Mikah Hudson.

Hudson led his congregation in a service of remembrance Friday night.

"We believe that in that death God has offered us forgiveness and has offered us a gift of love and grace," he said.

People were also making preparations for Easter Sunday on Friday.

"This is actually bigger than Christmas for us," said Sikes Children Shoes and Jack n' Jill store owner Laura Player.

According to Player, the shop has been swamped all week with people wanting that perfect Easter Sunday outfit.

"I bring in extra staff to help out during this time of year. And all of my regular staff works overtime," said Player.

Other people took time Friday to shop for their Easter Sunday feast. Honey Baked Ham in Vestavia Hills looked like it had a revolving door.

However, as much fun as the holiday can be, Hudson hopes people won't forget the real reason behind it.

"Everyday of Holy Week leading up to Easter is a celebration of our faith and what we believe about God, and how that faith makes itself known in how we live our lives," he said.
