HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A 74-foot white cross will light up Easter night for the first time in five years atop Monte Sano. It shone brightly for a few months as volunteers wrapped up a nearly year and a half long project to restore the giant cross and the hiking trail next to Burritt on the mountain.

Volunteers went up in droves. Mayfair Church of Christ brought more than 50 people to help clear a lot of the debris surrounding the giant cross.

The area sits about a five to ten minute walk from Burritt on the mountain. For more than 100 years, Monte Sano has had a cross overlooking Huntsville. Volunteers said W.R. Dixon, the same man that created Huntsville City Hall, was the person that designed the cross. Crews built it in 1963, but fell on hard times in recent years.

Volunteers said they started working on clearing the land and trail in hopes of lighting the cross again, and said they never want to see the area return to the poor state they found it in.

"We want to maintain it, keep the weeds and honeysuckle from coming back, the ongoing power bill," said Joe Essner of the Mayfair Church of Christ. "We're here for the long haul."

Volunteers said the easiest way to spot the cross on Monte Sano is to go next to Huntsville Hospital on Governor Drive and look directly up the mountain.
