Phenix City priest explains history of Good Friday

Posted: Updated:

With only two days shy of the Easter Sunday, many Christians are spending their Good Friday to properly prepare for the holiday.

But what's good in Good Friday? According to the Bible, it's the day when Jesus Christ was crucified.

Father Tom Weise with Saint Patrick Catholic Church in Phenix City says the church honors the day by following a different schedule.

"So one day out of 365 days…not even the Pope does mass because Christ is in the tomb," said Father Weise. "So we read about his suffering, and have communion which was consecrated the day before…which was the Holy Thursday."

Good Friday is not a government holiday at the federal level in the United States. However Florida, Louisiana, North Carolina and few other states celebrate Easter as a state holiday.
