New numbers released on Friday from the Alabama Labor Department show Alabama's unemployment rate rose, despite jobs being added.

Alabama's unemployment rate for March is 6.7%, up .3% from February. March's rate represents more than 144,000 people who are unemployed.

Tom Surtees, Alabama's Labor Commissioner, says the unemployment rate increased because the labor force grew by more than 14,000. Only about half of those people found jobs.

Surtees says employment numbers are the highest they have been in at least nine months, which indicates increased confidence in the job market. Several industries made gains this month including hospitality, transportation, utilities, government and construction.

The most demanded jobs in Alabama are truck drivers, registered nurses, and supervisors of retail sales workers. The counties with the lowest unemployment rates are Shelby, Lee, Cullman and Cherokee. Counties with the highest unemployment are Wilcox, Perry and Dallas.
