MADISON, AL (WAFF) -

Students at Heritage Elementary got a full helping of health instruction Thursday. The school received a grant from a local physicians group for a Childhood Obesity Awareness Day.

Third through sixth graders spent the day learning about healthy food choices. They visited various stations setup around the school to learn about nutrition, meal serving size, and exercise. Organizers said directly teaching the children about healthy options will make a difference in the long run.

"We believe that early intervention and starting to develop habits early in life is the way to prevent obesity in adulthood," said Assistant Principal Nicole Phillips.

Each student got information tot take home, a free t-shirt, and a pedometer.
