HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Some church leaders are turning up their criticism of Huntsville's school rezoning plan.

Church leaders are planning a special prayer meeting next week to talk about the city school system's student assignment plan. Ten of these leaders have signed a letter opposing school officials' attempts to get the plan approved in court.

Lawyers for the Huntsville school system have been trying to get a federal judge to approve its new student assignment plan and the U.S. Justice Department has been opposing it.

School board president David Blair said he wants to work with the city's church leaders but that the letter filed in federal court opposing Huntsville's new student assignment plan, signed by several local clergymen, misses the mark.

The letter accuses school leaders of "purposely not including the north Huntsville community" in drawing up the zoning plan, even though north Huntsville's school board member Laurie McCaulley was involved and the system held community forums on it at the insistence of the Justice Department.

The letter claims "redrawn zone lines are further segregating" the city, something which Blair claims is false saying the city's zone plan and the Justice Department's plan are virtually identical, except for some DOJ features that are simply illegal.

The ministers also went on to say "the curriculum of north Huntsville schools is not competitive," a claim Blair says might have had some merit five or ten years ago, but not today.

The church meeting to go over the student assignment plan will be held next Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at First Missionary Baptist Church in Huntsville.
