MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

The Madison County Commission is debating stopping county crews from accepting cash payments for county work like hauling gravel to residents' property.

The debate comes weeks after authorities arrested a former commission employee on theft charges.

Commissioner Eddie Sisk said the issue could come up at a commission meeting next week.

Current Madison County policy allows citizens to pay cash for county crews to deliver gravel to replace driveways and roadways. The work costs between $62 and $125 depending on the size of the load.

Commissioner Sisk said he's all for the move away from cash after he uncovered information suggesting a former commission employee stole thousands of tax payer dollars.

District 4 Commissioner Phil Vandiver said his district adopted a "no cash policy" three weeks ago ahead of any vote.

"I just feel like private works needs to be above board. We don't need to have any questions asked from the public. We want the citizens to understand that what we're doing is above board, legal, and matching up with everything we need to do that's right," said Vandiver.

But does restricting the public from paying cash violate federal law? The Coinage Act of 1965 says Americans can use cash to pay for all debts, public charges, taxes and dues.
