HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The price of pork and beef is going up and experts say shoppers are already seeing an impact at grocery stores and restaurants.

"It has amazed me that the livestock farmers, the distributors, and the grocery stores have kept costs down for the consumers," said agriculture specialist Robert Spencer.

According to Spencer, beef prices are on the rise for several reasons. The agriculture specialist said the country's drought from a few years ago, the current California drought, and the downturn in the farming industry since the recession are all contributing factors.

It has all led to a very small supply of livestock and a high demand.

According to the USDA, the pork industry is seeing struggles because of a disease from China. Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea or PED is blamed for killing millions of baby pigs in the last year. USDA officials are tracking it through 27 different states and still working on trying to stop it.

Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries spokesperson Brett Hall said PED is not in Alabama.

"We're always on the lookout for things that might impact Alabama agriculture," said Hall. "We work closely with the USDA, and in some cases we cover for USDA inspectors at some smaller meat processing plants. We haven't had any reports of this virus in Alabama."

According to government readings for February, the cost of beef is up 56 percent since 2010. The AP reported the cost of bacon up 13 percent since last year.
