Opelika City Councilman Joel D. Motley is announcing his resignation from the council, according to a news release provided by the City of Opelika.

In the release, Motley, who has served on the council for five years, said, "I wish to thank the citizens of District 3 for giving me the opportunity of serving you these past five years. I am grateful for your patience, your understanding, your words of support and prayers. It is through your efforts and hard work that we enjoy a special quality of life in Opelika. It has been an honor and privilege to serve you on the City Council."

Because there is more than a year left on Motley's term, a special election will be held. The city council plans to consider a special election for July 8, 2014 at its meeting Tuesday.

If the ordinance is adopted, candidates may begin qualifying on April 22 through May 6.

If a run-off election is required, the run-off election will be held on August 26.
