Chargers bats solid in win over Christian Brothers

Posted: Updated:

In front of a Charger Park record crowd of 714 fans, the University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team registered a doubleheader sweep and ensured a series victory against visiting Christian Brothers on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers improve to 28-13 and 16-7 in GSC competition while the Bucs fall to 11-27 overall and 3-20 in conference play.

The Chargers extended their season-high winning streak to six games, while owning a 6-3 record in games decided by just one run.
Right-hander Alex Aultman (5-4) pitched exceptionally well in the second stanza as the senior went the distance for his second career complete-game shutout while striking out seven batters and scattering four hits.

Justin Riddle led the offense on the day, finishing 5-for-7 from the plate with two doubles and saw his batting average improve by 19 points from .231 to .250 and is now hitting .400 (12-30) since being permanently inserted into the starting lineup against Delta State on March 22.

Game 1: UAH-5 CBU-4
Tyler Howell picked up his team-leading seventh win on the mound while pitching seven innings allowing two earned runs on eight hits. Luke Mould registered his sixth save of the season, pitching the final two innings and allowing just one earned run.

Justin Riddle led the offense, going 3-for-4 from the plate while teammate Conner McCain produced a team-best two RBI and a hit.

Christian Brothers gave UAH all they could handle over the course of the contest, even taking an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second before the Chargers' offense came alive in the third frame to take a 3-1 advantage.

Riddle led off the inning with a double down the right-field line before Chandler Brock drove in Riddle from second and McCain's two-RBI double to left scored Brandon Lawing and Brock.

Following a CBU home run in the sixth inning to bring the Bucs to within one, 3-2, the Chargers answered in the bottom half to put the lead back at two as Chase Handley's sacrifice bunt brought in a hustling Colton Simbeck from third.

The Chargers would score once more in the bottom of the eighth when Lawing singled through the left side to send Burton home from second base to give UAH the 5-2 lead.

Things would get interesting in the top of the ninth as Christian Brothers scored two runs to bring them to within one. With the tying run on second base, Luke Mould came up with two big outs to seal the victory for the Chargers.

Game 2: UAH-6 CBU-0
The Chargers got started early in the second contest with two runs in the bottom of the first when Cody Burton came home on a CBU balk after Brock sent a single up the middle to advance Burton to third and McCain extended his eight-game hitting streak with a single to right center to drive in Brock in the next at bat.

UAH scored two more runs in the bottom of the third thanks to Blake Massey's two-RBI double to bring in Lawing and Burton right after Burton and Lawing both got on base with hits.

Lawing would add to the lead when the junior slapped a single through the left side to score Riddle and UAH would put the game out of reach in the sixth when Ben Hall came sprinting home on a wild pitch to give the Chargers a 6-0 lead.

The Chargers will go for the sweep tomorrow as first pitch is set for 1 p.m. Senior Drew Eiland is expected to make the start on the mound with the lefty boasting a 6-1 record this season and an ERA of 1.85.
