HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

April is the month for awareness for two important causes.

First is Autism Awareness. The annual autism walk pulled in 15-hundred people to participate in the day's activities of a two mile walk and even more off the track. The Centers for Disease Control said 1 in 68 children are affected by autism, and 1 in 42 boys.

"We are all around autism every day, so whether we are at the grocery store, or our kids in school, we need to teach our kids patience, tolerance, and kindness, and we need to teach adults that too," said Autism Walk Coordinator Jenny Morris.

The event served as a fundraiser for the Autism Society of America.

Families also turned out for another important cause as well. This time, it was for awareness on child abuse. The event did have a little fun, however.

The National Children's Advocacy Center hosted its Superheroes 5K – 1 Mile Fun Run and Family Block Party on Saturday. April is also the month for Child Abuse Awareness. All proceeds went to the NCAC's Intervention and Prevention programs.
