HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Police said a man surrendered after he was caught trying to steal copper from a vacant building.

The vice chairman of United Printed Circuits went by to check on the building on Sparkman Drive around 8:20 p.m. Friday. The victim said he called police after he noticed damage to a roll-up door and heard power tools inside the building.

Police and a K-9 unit responded, and officers said the offender, identified as 63-year-old John Lee Patton, surrendered after hearing the K-9 unit outside.

Officers said Patton had been trying to steal copper from the vacant building. He was arrested and charged with burglary and possession of burglary tools.
