LIMESTONE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Athletes hit the field Friday at the Athens High School for the year's Limestone County Special Olympics.

A group of runners got the day started and ran a total of 77 miles through several Limestone County towns to raise awareness for the Special Olympics. They also raised money to help send some of the athletes to the state-wide competition in May.

For Barry Pugh, every mile was worth it to see the looks on the athlete's faces.

"Special athletes are the best runners out there because they enjoy it," said runner Barry Pugh. "They laugh, they clap, they sing the whole time they're doing it and I think that really brings the joy of running out."

Supporters came to cheer the athletes on the track and field events throughout the day.
