DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

A motion was filed to bring a lawsuit against the City of Decatur back to Morgan county. The suit demanded that the city adopts a city manager form of government voters chose four years before.

Attorneys for the plaintiff filed the motion. The city moved it to federal court, because their attorneys said the change in government would violate the Voting Rights Act. It would eliminate the city's only district with a majority of African-American voters. WAFF-48 Legal Expert Mark McDaniel said the city had a good argument.

"I still believe you cannot pass a law that discriminates against a people's right to vote, and if you have a law that totally sets aside a district that is representing right now a minority, then you're going to have a severe fight on your hands there," said McDaniel.

The city has two weeks to submit their case for keeping the lawsuit in federal court.
