MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Volunteer firefighters in Marshall County could soon be knocking on residents' doors asking not for money, but to sign a petition to get money, after the county commission established four fire districts in the county.

Firefighters are finding it difficult to obtain funding to help put your house out in case of fire, so they are asking for your help by paying $60 per year. But you get a vote on the matter first.

With approximately 18 eligible, the Marshall County Commission approved the first four fire districts: Georgia Mountain, Four-C, Hebron and Swearengin. Those four districts are now approved to begin the process of obtaining five percent of the voters to sign off on a referendum for a mandatory $5-per-month fire protection fee.

Fire districts receive just over $13,000 in revenue from tobacco taxes, but fire officials said that doesn't come close to what it costs to buy and maintain equipment. They make up the difference with fundraisers, which they said are becoming more difficult.

Firefighters hope to get their petition signed in time for the runoff election in July. If not, it will be during the general election in November.
