SHEFFIELD, AL (WAFF) -

Prom season is here, and that means high school students across the Tennessee Valley will be dressing up and heading out. In the Shoals, one high school is taking a hands-on approach to lessons on drinking and driving.

Students at Sheffield High School looked on Thursday as area first responders worked a mock wreck scene involving the fictional death of one of their classmates.

School leaders based the crash off a drunk driver, and students had an up-close look at how devastating poor choices can be. Officials hope students everywhere can learn from Thursday's demonstration.

"We don't want it to happen to them, but it can happen to you, and we want them to not drink and drive or do any drugs. We just want them to be safe and make positive choices," said Sheffield police officer Henry Green.

Sheffield High's prom is scheduled for this Saturday.
