HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

On Wednesday, President Obama and the First Lady will visit Ft. Hood for a memorial service. Just last week, three people were killed there when a fellow soldier opened fire before killing himself. The shooting marked the third major gun attack on a U.S. installation in the past five years.

A recent study looked into the effect that shootings like the one at Ft. Hood have on potential employers looking to hire veterans. The study was done in 2010 by the Society for Human Resource Management. It focused on the recruiting and employing of military personnel.

The study found that 46% of employers interviewed reported PTSD and mental illness as a potential reason why they wouldn't hire a veteran.

The unemployment rate for Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans is slightly higher that the national average. Admiral Michael Mullen is the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He commented on the issue on Sunday's edition of "Meet the Press." Mullen said, "This is a great military, and I wouldn't want one incident like this to tarnish the reputations of the hundreds of thousands of vets in our country who run businesses, who teach at schools, who coach little league games and who make a big difference in our community now and will for the future."
