MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Alabama State University held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday to unveil its first urban garden.

The school's gifted gardeners group began the project to promote a fresh and healthy diet. ASU President Gwendolyn Boyd said that this is only the beginning for the garden.

"A greenhouse will be developed, seeds will be planted and there will be research conducted here," President Boyd said. "So it will be even more than just feeding the people in the neighborhood and the community, but also looking at new methods of research of how one seed will be able to feed thousands. So Alabama State will be able to continue to give back to the community."

The garden is located at Hornet's Plaza behind the ASU National Center.
