Troup Co. Officials: Man in custody after Waffle House standoff

TROUP COUNTY, GA (WTVM) -

Officials say William Madison Cahall, 36, of Woodstock, Ga. in now in custody after locking himself in a restaurant bathroom with a flare gun while refusing to surrender to authorities.

The standoff occurred at the Waffle House on Hamilton Rd. off of I-185, Exit 42 in Troup County. It began this morning, April 8, around 3 a.m. and ended five hours later at around 8 a.m.

Law enforcement with the Troup County Sheriff's Office, and LaGrange Police surrounded the Waffle House to negotiate with man. Police say the suspect never threatened anyone, but they took every precaution, and were successful in removing Cahall from the restaurant.

Investigators have charged Cahall with VGCSA Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Felony Obstruction of Officers, and Criminal Trespass.

The Waffle House and nearby Shell gas station were closed during the incident. Traffic was open on the road, and students arrived at Rosemont Elementary School across the street from the restaurant. The school underwent voluntary lockdown.

Cahall is currently in the Troup County Jail awaiting bond hearing. More charges are anticipated.
