Tuscaloosa investigators charged a man with domestic violence for pouring hot grease on his sleeping girlfriend early Sunday morning.
Anthony Dwayne McGraw, 40, poured hot grease on his 39-year-old girlfriend after they had a heated argument about their relationship ending, according to witnesses in the home.
The victim told authorities she woke up to hot grease being poured over her face on Sunday morning. She says she saw McGraw standing over her when she opened her eyes.
The assault happened around 4 a.m. Sunday, April 6 at a house in the 2900 block of Ozment Road in West Tuscaloosa. By the time law enforcement got there, McGraw had fled the scene.
"It appears he began cooking something while she asleep on the couch and for whatever reason, decided that was going to be his weapon of choice," Lt. Kip Hart with the Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit said.
The woman was severely burned on her face and arms and was transported to UAB Hospital for treatment. She is expected to survive her injuries but it may be a long recovery. She's now in UAB's burn unit.
"My understanding, her injuries are quite severe as far as she'll probably need cosmetic surgery," Hart said.
Court documents indicate the victim's children were there during the assault. Investigators say the victim and McGraw have a 10-year-old child together.
U.S. Marshals arrested McGraw on Monday around 7 p.m. at a home near Kaulton Park. He's been charged him with first degree domestic assault and is being held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on a $60,000 bond.
