LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department is on the scene of what investigators are calling a suspicious death.
Authorities are conducting the death investigation at home on County Road 511 near Anderson.
Family members said the victim is 61-year-old Royce Franklin Varnell. Varnell was wheelchair-bound and had been living alone. Community members described Royce as a good-hearted man who generally kept to himself.
"He was a big Alabama fan, and he would call and talk about the game," remembered Royce's niece, Christy White.
Varnell's son Gerald arrived at the seen shortly after hearing the news. "It still feels like I am dreaming; I guess it's not reality yet," Gerald said. "You don't go through trials and tribulations for no reason. The good Lord wouldn't put us through all this crap if we weren't supposed to get something out of it," he added.
Gerald hopes the person who ended his father's life will repent. "God can forgive him, because right now I am not in the mood to," he said.
Investigators said the victim died from a gunshot wound. Police are hesitant to release more information about the case because they said it may jeopardize potential leads.
