HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Opening statements began Monday in the case of the Discovery Middle School shooter's father.

Dr. Iqbal Memon is charged with hindering prosecution. Memon is accused of trying to help his son Hammad leave the country before his murder trial. This stemmed from a case dating back to 2010.

Iqbal's trial was previously rescheduled. His wife has already pleaded guilty to attempted hindering prosecution.

Their son, Hammad Memon, pleaded guilty to shooting a killing his classmate, Todd Brown, at Discovery Middle School in February 2010. Both boys were 14-years-old at the time of the shooting. Hammad is serving a 30-year prison sentence.

The jury in Dr. Memon's trial will be comprised of nine women and three men. The first witness was called to the stand shortly following opening statements.
