HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Sunday marked the second day of the 67th-annual conference of the Alabama Fraternal Order of Police.

Topics discussed on the second day of conference included the need for bulletproof vests, political candidates, as well as which council members should be nominated for executive positions.

Former President of the Fraternal Order, Bill Davis, hopes police officers take advantage of a program he started that will protect them from flying bullets. The program provides bulletproof vests for agencies that cannot afford to buy them. "We have definitely saved lives with our vests and feel like one life is worth every vest we have ever given away," he said.

The activity that stood out the most for Russell County law enforcement officer Amanda Jenkins was the memorial service, where she remembered a fallen officer close to her heart – her husband.

"Knowing Daniel and watching him grow as a person, as a police officer, as a husband, as a father, it was a real emotional thing," said Amanda.

Amanda has been a member of the Fraternal Order for years, and said words couldn't describe how she felt, hearing Daniel's name read amongst the list of those who lost their lives. "They are our brothers and sisters in law enforcement, and how can we not honor them?"

"Bittersweet" is the word Davis used to describe the ceremony. "We honor the fallen officers and the families, but at the same time it is one of those things where it brings back old memories, and wounds that won't ever heal," he said.

Officials said nationwide, an average of 60-100 officers die every year in the line of duty.
