MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The Alabama Department of Transportation is urging drivers to slow down, pay attention, limit distractions and be aware of workers along roadways during National Work Zone Awareness Week.

The awareness week starts on Monday, and this year's theme, "Work Zone Speeding: A Costly Mistake", aims to bring attention to the fines, jail time and lives lost when drivers speed through work zones. Data from 2013 shows that of the 1,991 crashes that occurred in highway work zones in Alabama, there were 18 fatalities and almost 700 injuries. Primary reasons for work zone-related crashes involve alcohol, speeding and distracted driving.

Work zone crashes and fatalities have decreased nationwide since 2007. This year, Alabama saw a decrease in crashes and fatalities in work zones from 2012, where there were 2,232 crashes and 23 fatalities in highway work zones.

National Work Zone Awareness Week was established Dec. 15, 1999.
