HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The Alabama Department of Transportation reminds drivers to slow down and pay attention as they observe National Work Zone Awareness Week.

Last year, out of the 1,991 crashes in highway work zones in Alabama, there were 18 fatalities. In 2012, there were 2,232 work zone crashes with 23 fatalities.

The national campaign's theme for 2014 is "A Costly Mistake." Motorists are asked to consider what hasty actions and speeding in work zones may cost, in terms of fines, jail time, or even injuries and lives. For more information on the national campaign, visit the American Traffic Safety Services Association.
