HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A Huntsville Police Officer that was injured during a shootout early Friday morning is doing well.

Officer Jason Moore is recovering from the surgery done to remove the shotgun pellets from his face, according to a department spokesperson.

Moore was injured in the line of duty early Friday morning during a domestic violence called turned standoff on Stanford Drive. When officers arrived, the suspect, later identified as William Stogner, opened fire, hitting Moore in the face. Two other officers returned fire.

Stogner barricaded himself inside the home and continued shooting, sparking a gunfight with police. His wife, a victim of domestic violence, fled the home before the gunfire began. SWAT members continued to fire until Stogner stopped. He died from multiple gunshot wounds.

"In situations like this, you don't really have time to think about what's going on," said retired Huntsville Police Officer Bill Davis. "You have to rely on your training and go with your gut feeling on what you need to do."

The Police Department will conduct an internal investigation into the deadly shooting.
